The vegetation is adapted to dry conditions and includes several rare plants, among them a recently discovered species of Mimetes. The reserve was established in 1970 with the specific purpose of conserving a small population of Cape mountain zebra. Other mammals that occur here are Klipspringer, grey rhebok, common duiker, steenbok and Cape grysbok. Leopard also roam these mountains but they are rarely seen. Over 140 bird species have been recorded. Location: South-east of the province; west of Oudtshoorn. Access: From Oudtshoorn take the R62 westwards towards Calitzdorp, turn left after 12 km onto the concrete-paved old Calitzdorp road; continue for 18 km, turn left at the Uitvlugt signpost onto a gravel road; cross the Olifants River and travel 7 km to the reserve following signposts. There are no internal roads. Vehicles must be left at the entrance gate, where permits can be obtained from the information centre. Accommodation: Tented bush camp (3x4 beds) There is accommodation at Calitzdorp Spa, 10 km further west. Other facilities: A 2-day guided hiking trail for groups of 6 to 12 people (arrangements should be made in advance); 1-day hiking trail; 4 short trails; a 4x4 trail of about 60 km; picnic sites; information centre.
